Writing about Quynh Dao with the main character Han Ni in the novel, I remember the story of Bao Nhi. Completely and casually recalling the old story, yet it makes people sad. Such is life. There is joy but there is also sadness that alternates from time to time to create the poetry taste. The story of Taiwan was planned to write only 3 articles, but with the current rambling tune like this will probably become... 6 episodes. The reason is this, just mentioning literature but missing out movies is not fair. But the Taiwanese cinema is quite immense. This article I‘ll chat a bit about it.
Our generation did not have the internet like today. At that time, only books and movies were the bridge for us to connect and to see the world around us. With movies, there were no sequels at that time, only one film for each story, except for the ones on television. Usually most of the films were wrapped up in about 90 minutes. Few classic movies stretched for at most about 3 hours. So when you finish watching a movie, you are satisfied, no longer resentful. Every movie must have a similar style, the good side and the bad side. At the beginning, the evil prevails, at the end of the film, the good overcomes the evil. Western romantic movies focus on expressing inner thoughts. Eastern movies often exploit love triangles and in the end whoever has "true love" gets married after lots storms. Comedy movies were also present. But Chinese movies had another type of movie that doesn’t clash with the rest of the world, they were swordplay and kung fu movies. I must say there was a time we were head over heel loving and hooked to this kind of action movies.
I've been watching swordplay and kung fu movies since the time they were only in black and white. Usually the plot was that the whole family would be killed, but there was a boy who was missed out, grew up, learnt martial arts reaching the supreme level and then went back to take revenge. Or accidentally fell into a cave, ate a wonder peach or something and suddenly became so strong. Or lost the way in a strange cave then stumbled on a secret martial text, trained with teachings in the text and became strong and unstoppable that in just waving the hands his opponents would fall in rows.... Later there was a colour film, at that time there was only Eastmancolor (brown tone, very boring to watch), films in Technicolor looked better. The big screen back then used the word "huge width screen". When there was a colour film, the stars were extremely beautiful. Since then, in the hearts of teenage boys, there was always a beauty chic in their hearts. I loved Ivy Ling Po (Trinh Phoi Phoi). Girls fonded Hei Wong (Vuong Vu), Ti Lung (Dich Long).... Whoever still remembers them now ... they are all in the seventies...
Why do we like swordplay and kung fu movies? At least it makes us temporarily forgot our real world and soaked in the dream world with flying is possible: moving in the air, walking on rooftops, walking on water. One man can single handed beat the hell out of many people... It made us forget the inhibitions of school age lads at that time. In those days, there were many children in every house, parents struggled with life, so their children had to take care of themselves, and they were often being caned, unlike now, most families have only one or two children. I also often feel sad and sorry for the hardships my family faced, so I often tried to forget it b resorting on watching movies that are not real in the world. There were many types of social realism movies, but swordplay and kung fu provided us more "high". Now this type of film is rare.
Only Hong Kong can make was good Swordsmanship and kung fu films. Japan also imitated it but not very well (Blind Knight). Because in Japanese sword fighting, swords are drawn out of the cover then with just one quick slash, it was it and the fight was over. With the Chinese film, the fighting was so tense and excited, dragged on and on, from the roof then flipped a few times to the ground and then... fly to the top of the tree. Swords flying, darts tossing, and thrusting out powerful air storms through both hands. Nowadays, Korea is also very good at making martial arts movies. Vietnam after 75 also made this kind of film t ơ to catch the trend. I also bought tickets to support the local productions. LOL....
The only regret was that the swordplay and kung fu movies had no sex scenes. The girls were so beautiful and attractive, but the clothes were shabby. Just peeling off all these layer of clothes ... the movie fast reached the end. Left the cinema with lingering uptight. More stress as the result.
There were a number of swordplay and martial arts films produced in Taiwan. About a decade ago, I watched a great movie: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The title of the movie was cool. There were tigers with dragons, tigers lying in waiting for preys, dragons in the clouds. Looked at the names of the stars worked in the film, I saw that there was Zhang Ziyi (Chương Tư Di) and also Chow Yun Phat (Chau Nhuan Phat), how could I let it go. The film was Taiwanese made but with all Hong Kong and mainland actors. Chow Yun Phat was my favourite, ever since I watched the movie "Blood soaks the Shanghai wharf". With Zhang Ziyi in the cast, I loved it because having her in then for sure there would be sex scenes. Please don't condemn me ... a pervert. Sex in the movie is an art that though all of my life, even though I've done it thousands of times, they were not as good as they acted (fake) on the screen.... naturally crave forever. I watched this movie on Australian SBS, speaking Chinese with English subtitles, so I understood a little bit. The plot of the movie was also common, but in this movie, they performed sword fighting like dancing: gentle, full of poetry, not scary and bloody. Where to find a role other than Chow Yun Fat with deep eyes. The last sentence he said to his lover before he died was so beautiful and romantic: "I'd rather be a wandering ghost to be with you for the rest of your life than go to heaven without you. Because of our love, you will never be alone.”... you guys should learn and remember by heart this sentence, you are sure to not "fail" ever in winning your chic’s heart. Or the sentence: "Because of love, I don't care right or wrong" by La Ho (Lee Min Ho) talking to Kieu Long (Chương Tu Di). So, watching movies also does help us a lot.
Taiwan has had the merit of bringing martial arts movies to the world that no other Hong Kong or mainland China movies can do, but they only used actors and scenes from the mainland, so disappointed. Knew that the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” also won the American Oscar. Chatting about Taiwan but not talking about this movie, it’s deficient. Viết về Quỳnh Dao với nhân vật Hàn Ni,tui lại nhớ qua chuyện Bảo Nhi. Hoàn toàn tình cờ nhắc lại chuyện cũ, ấy vậy mà làm bà con buồn. Cuộc đời là vậy. Có vui nhưng cũng có nỗi buồn lâu lâu xen kẽ mí nhau tạo nên thi vị . Kể chuyện xứ Đài tính viết 3 kỳ thôi nhưng cái điệu lan man như thế này chắc thành... 6 kỳ quá. Số là vầy, nhắc chuyện văn chương mà quên phim ảnh là chưa đủ. Mà cái nền điện ảnh xứ Đài khá lớn. Bài này tui tám về nó chút.
Cái thế hệ của tụi tui không được như ngày nay có internet. Thời đó chỉ sách vở với phim ảnh để thấy được thế giới quanh ta. Được một cái là phim lúc ấy không có tiếp theo, trừ những phim trên truyền hình. Thường thì gói gọn trong 90 phút. Phim nào kinh điển mới kéo dài 3 giờ. Nên khi xem xong một phim là thoả mãn, không còn ấm ức. Phim nào cũng phải có một kiểu giống nhau là bên chánh, bên tà. Mới đầu là tà thắng thế, cuối phim thì chánh thắng tà. Phim tình cảm Tây thì chú trọng diễn tả suy nghĩ nội tâm. Phim của ta thì hay khai thác tình tay ba rồi cuối cùng ai có " true love " thì lấy được nhau sau bao giông bão. Phim hài cũng có. Nhưng phim tầu có thêm mội loại phim không đụng hàng với thế giới đó là phim kiếm hiệp. Phải nói có một thời tụi tui mê mẩn.
Tui xem phim kiếm hiệp từ lúc chỉ có phim đen trắng. Thường cốt truyện là có nguyên dòng họ bị giết hết nhưng còn sót một cậu bé được giấu đi, lớn lên học võ giỏi rồi đi trả thù. Hoặc một thư sinh tình cờ rớt xuống hang động, ăn được trái đào gì đó mà trở thành khoẻ mạnh không ai đánh lại. Hoặc lạc vào hang động tình cờ thấy được bí kíp luyện chưởng, quơ tay một cái là bao người ngã lăn quay.... Sau này có phim mầu, lúc đó chỉ có mầu Eastmancolor ( tone nâu, xem buồn lắm ), phim mầu Technicolor thì hình đẹp tươi hơn. Màn hình rộng hồi đó dùng từ " đại vĩ tuyến ". Khi có phim mầu thì các minh tinh đẹp ác. Từ đó trong lòng mấy cậu bé bao giờ cũng có một em ở trong lòng. Tui mê Trịnh Phối Phối. Mấy chị khoái Vương Vũ, Địch Long.... Ai còn nhớ là giờ ...7 bó rồi...
Vì sao mà ta thích phim kiếm hiệp? Ít nhất nó cũng làm mình tưởng tượng bay bổng : khinh công, đi trên mái nhà, đi trên nước . Một mình đánh bại bao nhiêu người... Nó làm mình quên đi nỗi ức chế của tuổi học trò thời ấy. Ngày ấy nhà nào cũng đông con, cha mẹ vật lộn với cuộc sống nên con cái phải tự lo, lại còn hay bị đánh bị đòn ,chớ không như bây giờ gia đình nào cũng chỉ một hai con. Tui cũng hay tủi thân về cái gia đình của mình nên hay tìm quên vào những phim mà không có thật trên đời. Có nhiều loại phim hiện thực xã hội nhưng phim kiếm hiệp " phê" hơn. Bây giờ loại phim này ít rồi.
Phim kiếm hiệp chỉ có Hồng Kông làm là hay. Nhật cũng bắt chước nhưng không hay lắm ( Hiệp sĩ mù ). Vì đấu kiếm của Nhật là rút kiếm ra chém một cái là xong. Của tầu là đánh trên mái nhà rồi lộn mấy vòng xuống đất rồi lại... bay lên ngọn cây. Vừa kiếm vừa phóng phi tiêu và tung thần chưởng. Bây giờ Hàn Quốc làm phim kiếm hiệp cũng hay lắm. VN hồi sau 75 cũng có làm loại phim này. Tui cũng mua vé vô ủng hộ. Cười đau bụng....
Chỉ tiếc một cái là phim kiếm hiệp không có cảnh sex. Mấy em đẹp quá trời mà quần áo lủ khủ. Lột hết đống quần áo này thì cũng vừa ... hết phim.
Xứ Đài ít có phim kiếm hiệp nhưng cách đây hơn chục năm được xem một phim hay quá: Ngoạ hổ tàng long. Nghe cái tựa phim là thấy ngầu. Có hổ có rồng, con hổ nằm rình mồi, con rồng lộn trong mây. Xem tên minh tinh tài tử thì thấy có Chương Tử Di rồi lại Châu Nhuận Phát làm sao bỏ được. Phim của Đài Loan nhưng toàn diễn viên Hồng Kông và trong lục địa. Châu Nhuận Phát là tui khoái lắm, từ lúc xem bộ phim " Máu nhuộm bến Thượng Hải ". Chương Tử Di thì còn khoái nữa vì có cổ là có cảnh sex. Xin bà con đừng nói tụi tui ... dê. Sex trong phim là một nghệ thuật mà cái đời của mình dù đã thực hiện cả ngàn lần cũng không được như người ta nên.... thèm hoài. Tui xem phim này trên đài SBS của Úc, nói tiếng tầu phụ đề tiếng Anh nên cũng hiểu sơ sơ. Cốt truyện phim thì cũng thường nhưng cái phim này họ đánh kiếm như múa : nhẹ nhàng, đầy chất thơ chứ không rùng rợn máu đổ thịt rơi. Tìm ra đâu vai diễn ngoài Châu Nhuận Phát với cặp mắt sâu thẳm. Câu cuối ảnh nói với người yêu trước khi chết thật hay :“Huynh thà làm hồn ma vất vưởng để được ở bên muội suốt đời còn hơn lên thiên đàng mà không có muội. Vì tình yêu của chúng ta, huynh sẽ không bao giờ cô đơn.” ... Các huynh học câu này tán mấy chị bảo đảm không " rớt " bao giờ. Hoặc câu : "Vì yêu nên em mặc kệ đúng sai " của La Hổ nói với Kiều Long ( Chương T D ). Nên xem phim cũng giúp ích chúng ta nhiều lắm đó.
Xứ Đài đã có công đưa được một tác phẩm điện ảnh kiếm hiệp ra toàn thế giới mà chưa có phim nào của HK hay đại lục làm được ,mà họ toàn dùng diễn viên và cảnh quay ở lục địa mới đau chứ. Nghe nói còn được Oscar của Mỹ. Tám về xứ Đài mà quên cái phim này cũng thiếu sót đó. Bài sau nói về tình Đài duyên Úc, nhớ đón xem.
