I used the English title “Mercenary” to remember the title of the movie that I watched about... 55 years ago. At that time, I just started high school. I remember because after watching it, I wrote a pretty long review, meaning it was horrible seeing the murder scenes in the movie. I must have had a talent for literature since childhood. Roughly the plot was in an African country, Europeans had colonized and exploited resources. Then local people rose up to take back the land and slaughtered them. The plot had a scene in a diamond mine, the director of the mine collected a large bag of diamonds but was surrounded so he couldn't take it away. He and his family were killed and the bag was taken by the rebels. A group of mercenaries were sent to retrieve the bag. They eventually got it back, but only a few managed to survive. They found a way through the forest to return to a safe area. The mercenary army consisted of white and black people. A group of white people, because of their greed, took hold of the bag, they plotted and killed others in their group to take all the diamonds for themselves. The whole movie was full of scenes of deaths and dirty plots. But the good hearted black soldier had swapped the bag of diamonds and sent them to their commander a long time before that, the white mercenaries killed each other and in the end only to get the bag of fakes.

When I was at school, I used to walk by the local crossroad every day. Right there, the army recruiting tables were set up. I saw a soldier sitting there, in front of him a cardboard with words: “Reward of....(a few thousand piasters) for signing up with the Armed Force”. When I asked the recruiting officer, I found out that many army units needed to recruit additional troops, they recruited here. Just bring the birth certificate and submit the volunteer form, received the schedule of the training date and... collected the rewarding cash. I heard that some young men of only 17 years old were still accepted. Also heard that the Americans recruited troops to be trained as commandos. I only heard rumours, but as I was young at the time and didn't fully understand the story.

Growing up, later learned that when American soldiers poured in, they needed a large force to take care of logistics such as building barracks, garrison, cooking and went to the battlefields with them. The recruits wore military uniforms but did not have guns, only doing jobs called "deck hand". They earned a pretty high salary, so they spent lavishly. Their clothes were also nice with all sorts of badges. But when he strolled on the street, met the military police and were asked for their ID, but as their IDs recorded their ages in the age of being drafted to the army, they were hushed to the army trucks and taken to the army training centre and charged with the offend of ... avoiding and dodging the army’s drafting.. After 75, anyone who had worked as a commando or in special units for the US, if they had successfully escaped to a temporary refugee camp and remembered the name of their commanders, they would be given the first priority to be admitted to the US. They were placed ahead of even the ARVN officers who had escaped in similar circumstances.

After that, with a little bit of studying, I started to understand. A combating army desperately needs servicing troops such as cooks, drivers, guards, etc., that were outnumber the combating troops. And the solution was to recruit local people at the place where they stationed, or hired local people living near their bases where the labour costs of ... "people" were cheap. Therefore, when the French crusaders returned to Vietnam, after 1945, and lost the battle of Dien Bien Phu, the French prisoners of war were mostly white Frenchmen but still had some "black French" among them. Regular soldiers were educated and fully trained, so their style, military style, and military discipline were all there even though they had lost the battle. As for mercenaries, they only had poor training, and they have no ideals. Join the army just for money. So most tragedies are originated from these mercenaries, such as greed or massacre, rape or something.

Our uncle Putin is famous for playing boldly in the Middle East battlefields, thanks to the use of this type of soldiers. There must be a big company doing business with him, provide as much as he needs. Regular troops have training, so they have to fight. If the land and territory was captured, it must have an army to keep the land and keep up with security. For this, the invading force uses mercenaries or foreign soldiers that "volunteer" in the fighting. Putin is using the army of Chechen Muslims. Famously for so lousy in fighting but so inhumanly cruel against civilians living in their occupied areas.

I think Russian regular soldiers are properly trained, they would never do "low" animal’s acts. It’s perhaps that these things are caused by those hired elements. They are assigned to keep security in the occupied areas so they are attacked by the Ukraine guerrilla force. They were ruthless, arrested, tortured and killed local people, they can loot and do horrendous things. There is no way to be able to control their awful acts. But they still wear Russian military uniforms with all kinds of insignia and are under the control of Russian regular officers. It is the tragedy of war.

Recently I heard the news that in southern Ukraine, Russian soldiers “revolted” against their own soldiers. Read the news but unable to understand the reasons. But you will understand if in the same army unit there are such “rotten apple” elements. F..k!!, at the battlefield front, the regular soldiers have to fight to death, whilst in the back, those mercenaries grasp and enjoy all the "delicious" rewards, but the "notorious" scandals caused by the mercenary elements are borne by all. To release their angry, a few rounds of bullets are used.

Lâu lâu chơi tựa tiếng Anh cho " ngầu " chút. Dịch là lính đánh thuê. Tui để cái tựa đề như vậy để nhớ cái tựa phim mà tui đã từng xem cách đây khoảng... 55 năm gì đó. Hồi đó mới bắt đầu trung học. Tui nhớ vì sau khi xem xong, có viết một bài cảm tưởng khá dài , ý là ghê rợn những cảnh giết chóc. Chắc là tui có khiếu văn chương từ nhỏ rồi. Đại khái cốt truyện là ở một xứ Phi Châu, những người châu Âu đã chiếm làm thuộc địa và khai thác tài nguyên. Nay dân nổi lên chiếm lại đất và tàn sát họ. Cốt truyện có cảnh ở một mỏ kim cương, người giám đốc thu gom được một túi kim cương lớn nhưng bị bao vây nên không đem đi được. Ông và gia đình bị giết và túi đó bị người nổi dậy chiếm được. Một toán lính đánh thuê được điều đến để cướp lại cái túi này. Cuối cùng họ cũng cướp lại được nhưng chỉ ít người còn sống sót. Họ tìm đường băng rừng để về vùng an toàn. Đoàn quân đánh thuê có người da trắng và cả người da đen. Nhóm người da trắng vì lòng tham muốn chiếm giữ cái túi nên tìm cách giết những người khác để một mình chiếm đoạt. Suốt cuốn phim toàn những cảnh chết chóc, mưu đồ. Kết cục là anh lính da đen tốt bụng đã đánh tráo túi kim cương để gởi cho chỉ huy từ trước, những người da trắng giết nhau để chiếm cái túi giả.

Cái thời tui còn đi học, ngày nào cũng đi bộ ngang ngã ba Ông Tạ. Ở ngay đây có đặt những bàn tuyển quân. Tui thấy có một anh lính ngồi đó, phía trước có hàng chữ ghi : tiền thưởng....( mấy ngàn gì đó ). Hỏi ra thì mới biết có nhiều đơn vị cần quân, họ tuyển mộ ở đây. Chỉ cần mang giấy khai sinh nộp, hẹn ngày đi huấn luyện và... lãnh tiền. Nghe nói có bạn mới 17 tuổi mà họ vẫn nhận. Cũng nghe nói người Mỹ tuyển quân để huấn luyện làm biệt kích. Nghe đồn thôi chớ tui còn nhỏ, không hiểu hết chuyện.

Lớn lên , sau này mới biết khi lính Mỹ đổ quân vô, họ cần một lực lượng lớn lo hậu cần như làm doanh trại, đồn bót, nấu ăn và đi hành quân cùng với họ. Mấy người được tuyển dụng mặc đồ lính nhưng không có súng, chỉ làm những công việc gọi là "tạp dịch ". Họ ăn lương khá cao nên xài dữ lắm. Quần áo cũng đẹp với đủ loại phù hiệu. Nhưng khi đi xớ rớ trên đường, gặp quân cảnh hỏi giấy mà trong độ tuổi phải đi lính là bị tống lên xe đưa vô quân trường và mang tội... trốn lính. Thật không hiểu nhưng đó là sự thật và tui làm chứng. Sau 75, ai đã từng làm lính thuê cho Mỹ, nếu vượt biên ở trại tạm trú mà nhớ được tên người sếp chỉ huy, đều được ưu tiên nhận vào Mỹ. Họ đi trước cả những sĩ quan VNCH cùng hoàn cảnh vượt biên như vậy.

Sau này có học hành chút đỉnh thì hiểu chuyện. Một đội quân chiến đấu rất cần những đội quân phục dịch thí dụ như đầu bếp, lái xe, canh gác...., số quân này còn đông hơn quân chiến đấu và giải pháp là tuyển người ở địa phương nơi họ đóng quân hoặc tuyển ở nơi giá...." người" rẻ. Do đó lính viễn chinh Pháp khi họ trở lại VN và thua trận Điện Biên Phủ , là da trắng mà vẫn có " tây đen " đi cùng. Người lính chính quy thì có ăn học và huấn luyện đầy đủ nên tác phong, quân phong, quân kỷ đều có. Còn lính đánh thuê chỉ huấn luyện sơ sài , cũng như đâu có cái lý tưởng gì. Đi lính vì tiền. Nên đa số bi kịch bắt nguồn từ đây như tham lam hay tàn sát, hiếp dâm gì đó.

Bác Putin nhà ta nổi tiếng chơi bạo ở các chiến trường Trung Đông là nhờ sử dụng loại lính này. Có hẳn một công ty lớn làm ăn với bác, cần bao nhiêu là có bấy nhiêu. Quân chính quy có huấn luyện nên phải chiến đấu. Chiếm được đất thì phải có quân để giữ đất và giữ an ninh. Việc này bác dùng lính thuê hoặc lính người nước ngoài mà ..." tình nguyện ". Trong đó có đội quân người hồi giáo Chechnya. Nổi tiếng oánh dở mà tàn ác.

Tui nghĩ người lính chính quy Nga được đào tạo, họ không bao giờ làm những chuyện " ruồi bu ". Mà những chuyện này do những thành phần được thuê mướn đó. Họ giữ an ninh nên bị đánh du kích , họ phải bắt bớ và tra tấn rồi sát hại, họ có thể cướp bóc và làm những chuyện tiêu cực , làm sao mà kiểm soát được. Nhưng họ vẫn mặc áo lính Nga cùng đủ loại phù hiệu và dưới quyền sĩ quan chính quy. Đó là bi kịch chiến tranh.

Mới đây nghe tin ở miền nam Ukraine, lính Nga giao chiến với chính lính phe mình.Đọc tin mà không hiểu. Nhưng bạn sẽ hiểu nếu trong cùng một quân đội mà có thành phần như thế. Đm tiền phương oánh nhau chết mẹ, chúng ở nhà có gì " ngon " hưởng hết mà "tai tiếng "thì mang chung. Tức mình phải xả vài băng phải không?
