$62,000 from Vietnamese
A group of Vietnamese who studied in New Zealand over 35 years ago have raised $62,000 for Christchurch's earthquake relief fund.
The group studied in New Zealand between the late 1950s and 1975 as private students or on a scholarship programme known as the Colombo Plan.
In a joint statement the group said they wanted to establish a relief fund for Christchurch after spending their early years in New Zealand.
"We were given not only an education, but also hospitality and love by the people of New Zealand.
"We have been longing to have an opportunity to do something to express our love and gratitude to the New Zealand people who kindly and generously helped us in our education and training and also instilled in us a sense of personal responsibility," the statement said.
They collected over $62,000 within a week from 100 former students and their families living around the world.
The Colombo Plan's purpose was to develop the economies and raise the living standards of countries in South and South-East Asia.
Thousands of students from were educated at international universities, including in New Zealand.

CHRISTCHURCH RELIEF FUND: LETTER TO MINISTER OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS
07 April, 2011
Hon. Murray McCully MP,
Minister of Foreign Affairs
Parliament Buildings
Wellington
Dear Minister
We are a group of former Colombo Plan Scholarships students. During the era of The Republic of South Vietnam, from 1954 to 1975, we were very fortunate to obtain our higher education in New Zealand, under the auspices of Colombo Plan scholarships.
We have always remembered the loving care extended to us by the dedicated student officers in what is now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. They were our excellent guardians. What we and our families have now are the results of the generosity and kindness of the people of New Zealand.
Recently we, from all over the world, have banded together to set up a relief fund among us, our families and friends in order to lend a hand in comforting the people of Christchurch from the devastating earthquake on February 22, 2011.
Today we are very happy to report the result of our fund-raising activity to you and your Ministry, our former caretakers. We managed to collect a sum of about $62,000 from 100 contributors. This money has been forwarded to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal managed by the Department of Internal Affairs. The cheque of $62,000 was presented today to the Honourable Nathan Guy, Minister of Internal Affairs.
Yours sincerely
Hung Nguyen

CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND OF FORMER VIETNAMESE STUDENTS IN NZ FROM LATE 1950 TO 1975: PUBLIC STATEMENT
PUBLIC STATEMENT
CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND
DONATION FROM A GROUP OF FORMER-COLOMBO PLAN AND PRIVATE VIETNAMESE STUDENTS STUDYING IN NEW ZEALAND OF FORMER REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM
We are a group of former Vietnamese students who received our higher education and training in New Zealand from the late 1950’s to April 1975. We are both recipients of the Colombo Plan Scholarship and private students.
The devastating images of the recent earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, were shown on televisions and internet sites around the world and struck us deeply in our hearts
The extensive damages caused by the earthquake immediately compelled us to help the earthquake victims and their families. We decided to establish a relief fund to help the people of Christchurch. In just over a week, we have pooled together approximately NZ$62,000 from one hundred former students and their families living around the world: Australia, Canada, Europe, Middle East, New Zealand, and the US. We realize that this is an insignificant amount of money compared with billions of dollars of damages caused by the earthquake. However, with this token amount, we sincerely hope that we, as members of the big New Zealand family, could lend a hand in soothing and comforting earthquake victims in rebuilding their lives.
We spent our early years in New Zealand and always have fond memories of the country and her people. We were given education, hospitality and love by the people of New Zealand. We have been longing to have an opportunity to do something to express our love and gratitude to the New Zealand people who kindly and generously had helped us in our education and training and also instilled in us a sense of personal responsibility.
We pray that Christchurch and her people will overcome the adversities and quickly recover to wrest back her former beauty.
